Mauritius Has Cleaned Up Before. It's Never Been Measured. That Changes on 20 September.

Mauritius Cleanup Day 2026 is Mauritius's observance of World Cleanup Day — coordinated nationally under UNGA Resolution A/RES/78/122, taking place 20 September 2026.

Cleanups happen every year in Mauritius. Volunteers show up. Trash gets collected. Bags get counted.

Then the data disappears.

No national cleanup in Mauritius has ever been independently measured or verified. Not the tonnage. Not the environmental impact. Nothing put on record.

Mauritius Cleanup Day 2026 changes that.

Two claims. Both checkable.

MCD 2026 is the biggest environmental movement Mauritius has run — targeting roughly 63,250 participants, close to 5% of the population, in a single coordinated day.

It's also the first ever measured. No prior cleanup effort in Mauritius has produced verified data. MCD's National Impact Report will be the first.

These are two separate facts. Neither depends on the other.

What "measured" actually means

Every kilogram collected on 20 September will be segregated by category and converted into verified CO₂ equivalent — in real time, using an international tracking platform already in use in Europe, South America, and Asia.

Not an estimate. Not a bag count. A verified figure, tied to a national total.

Where the data goes

Every participant — individual or organisation — will receive a certificate showing exactly what they contributed: kilograms collected, CO₂ equivalent offset.

The same data, aggregated nationally, will form MCD's National Impact Report — broken down by event and organiser, published for the island, for government (Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Youth & Sport, Ministry of Tourism, local government), and for the UN system in Mauritius, via the UN Resident Coordinator's Office to the 24 UN agencies present in the country.

Why this matters beyond 20 September

Mauritius has never had a baseline. No verified number to build on, compare against, or hold anyone to.

After 20 September, it will.

That's not a bigger cleanup. That's a different kind of record.
